Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Ted Kenefick’s passion for wildlife ignited on weekend forays into the countryside outside of the city. An Indigo Bunting, singing its bubbling springtime song from an open perch in the meadows of western New York first provided the spark of inspiration. Not only was it the striking electric blue plumage of this tiny critter but it was also the simple realization that this animal has both an English and a scientific name and could be found in Peterson’s Field Guide to Eastern Birds. This was all that it took to launch Ted’s passion for the wildlife and wild places of our planet.
Family road trips from Buffalo to Cape Cod, to coastal Georgia and out west through the prairies to Colorado, Yellowstone, Glacier and the Pacific Coast only intensified Ted’s innate desire to explore the natural world. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Seattle, Washington and nature’s diversity continued to unfold as he explored the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
After majoring in history at the University of Oregon, Ted returned to Seattle and embarked on a career in the adventure travel industry, designing and implementing itineraries focused on natural history. During his 17-year run with Seattle-based adventure travel company, Zegrahm Expeditions, Ted traveled to all 7 continents. Most recently as an Expedition Development Manager with Lindblad Expeditions, Ted designed new itineraries and oversaw all operations of these expeditions.
In 2006, after acquiring his first digital SLR (a Nikon D70S), Ted was bitten by the wildlife photography bug. From the icebergs of Antarctica, to the wide-open savanna skies of Africa to the humid jungles of South America, capturing and sharing images of the myriad of fantastic creatures of our world has become Ted’s all-consuming passion.
Through his images, he hopes to inspire others to appreciate the variety, inherent beauty and intrinsic value of Planet Earth's wildlife.
